
Another scene on the towpath of the C & O Canal just below the Tavern at Great Falls on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. One can easily see the amount of lift each lock provided - about 18 feet - as one looks upstream in this image.
We read that there was only 3 inches of clearance on each side of the lock as the barges passed through and that there was a hefty fine if the barge damaged the masonry of the lock.
My wife and I are in training to serve on the Bike Patrol for the towpath so expect in the future to see a number of images of this national historical park posted here.
