
Momma mallard assumes this hiding posture when you first approach the area where this nest pot is located. After a few seconds, she figures out you are not a predator and sits more upright as shown in the image I posted yesterday.
She is more exposed in this pot than in the tulip pot she nested in previously so we will keep an eye on her to see if her nest needs more material. Soon she will have lots of school children passing by and she dealt with that well last year.
I took the two images of her with a 80-400mm telephoto from about 20 feet. She is comfortable with that distance in her current nest pot once she knows you are not coming any closer.

I like the "peeking" nature of this more covert posture before she got more trusting. A fine nesting situation to follow and continue to shoot. The 400mm did a fine job for you.
