Newfound Gap

Newiound Gap

previous | home | next

Here are two versions of an image captured at Newfound Gap in Great Smoky Mountains National Park at an elevation of 5046 ft. I was looking to the southeast - US Route 441 that traverses the park in a south to north direction is the only 'hand of man' feature that one can see from this view other than the overlook stone works.

In the color version you can see why these mountains are called the Blue Ridge. The b&w version was produced using the new b&w tools of Photoshop CS3. A red filter was used to cut the haze. These new tools alone are worth the price of the upgrade from CS2 if one does such conversions!

A fine pair of images. I like the blue haze so the color version is impressive in that way. The black and white version has a different, but equally strong appeal. I think some bloggers don't understand why we still do B&W images. :-)

Thanks for the comments, Don. I very much enjoy your b&w images and am pleased that you enjoyed mine.

I like both versions though the b&w has a bit more impact IMHO. I just learned that the Blue Ridge Mountains got their name from the blue haze created by release of hydrocarbons by the forest. You learn something new everyday.
