This is as close to a usable image as I was able to capture of the elusive short-earned owls of Elliot Island on Maryland's Eastern Shore. They glide just above the vegetation of the marshes in this area looking for a meal. In flight, they resemble very large moths with an impressive wingspan that allows them to glide while hunting. This ability undoubtedly helps them approach their prey without being noticed since when they do flap those large wings, they become quite a spectacle!
This image was shot a dusk - I was hand-holding a telephoto lens and panning as the owl flew by.
