Reaching Out

Reaching Out

previous | home | next

I was struck by the way it appears the grass stalks and the drooping tree limbs are reaching out toward each other in this scene from Brookside Gardens. This is another of the drooping trees that take on a very different and appealing look when they lose their leaves this time of year.

I am continuing to pursue the challenge I have accepted to shot Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, MD for one year. I am nearing the 6 month point and continue to find scenes that I find appealing.I was amazed just yesterday to find some late blooming camellia bushes in bloom in the aptly named, Camellia Garden..

The earliest blossoms I photographed in 2007 was a hillside of daffodils on January 8th - they were an early blooming variety but it was still quite a surprise to see them in full bloom so early in the year.

If you are ever in the Washington, DC area I consider this a 'must see' attraction - a real treasure. Even when there are no plants blooming outdoors, the Conservatory has seasonal displays that will delight you! There are also special displays throughout the year at the Conservatory. The current one is the Garden Railway Exhibit that features a splendid garden model railroad display. From mid November to the end of the first week in January each year the Gardens are transformed into a fantastic 'Garden of Lights' exhibit. The Gardens, including the Conservatory, are open year round except for Christmas Day and there is no charge for admission.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am the volunteer photographer for the Visitors Center of Brookside Gardens. I can also be found volunteering at the Information Desk of the Visitors Center on occasion.

The emotion in this image is subtle, but it grows on you as you look at and relax into the scene.

I like the idea of a theme over a period of time. This is an appealing shot. I like the interaction of the two very much. Nice one.

Winter certainly gives us some striking scenes. I love bare branches, especially with definition from light, shadow and background color. I like the framing and balance of this. You made the bottom third larger to compensate for the weight of the top two layers. Whether you did this instinctively or purposely, it works beautifully.

It definitely has the "feel" that they are reaching for each other.
Wonderful shot!

How neat to photograph something for an entire year.
