This is a scene from my archives of Great Seneca Creek in rural Montgomery County, Maryland. This creek is within a stream-side park for most if not all of its course to the Potomac River. There is a trail along most of it much of which I have hiked. I discovered this section while geocaching earlier in the year this was taken.
If you were to hike this section of Great Seneca Creek you would be confused by this image. If you use your imagination you can see that the stream has an S curve to it. In this rendition of this scene it starts out on the left and runs right before turning left again. Some suggest that this is the most pleasing direction for an S curve in a visual image. If the S curve is reversed it creates a certain tension in the image and is felt to be less appealing, according to some.
What would confuse you if you were to hike in this area is that this image has been rotated 180 degrees horizontally to present the S curve of the creek to be from left to right starting in the foreground.

This is a cool, even bleak, scene with winter browns and snow. And yet, I think the curves of the stream and the reflections, even if they are dark, had softness and hope.

You've outdone yourself with the cropping/framing of this scene. It's perfect! I like the extensive depth of field, the reflective water and the arching trees. Brown has never looked so good. :)

This is a most appealing stream. I agree that the direction of the S curve makes some difference. We don't need to feel bound by rules, but in nature there are some things that seem to be inherent in our minds...like three objects are more attractive than four, five more than six.
