Old Pump Shed

Old Pump Shed

previous | home | next

It is rather dreary here this morning and I was reminded of this shot from my archives. This is an old pump shed - water was pumped for farm use from the Monocacy River around the turn of 19th century. What remains of it stands on the site of the Monocacy National Battlefield.

This is the site of the important Civil War Battle of Monocacy Junction as described in the National Park Service brochure:

'The Civil War Battle that Saved Washington, D.C.
In the summer of 1864, General Jubal Early led Confederate forces towards Washington, D.C. and threatened to capture the capital city. On July 9, Union troops under General Lew Wallace met Early's forces here at Monocacy.'

The battle lasted long enough to delay the advance of the Confederates so that Union reinforcements could return to successfully defend Washington, DC.

Location/Date: Along the Monocacy River just south of Frederick, MD, October 18, 2004.

A great looking place. I like the high contrast and bright look of the image. The comment adds much to the post too. Well done.

Yes. It was the high contrast of this shot that really caught my attention. Excellent! I really like shots of old dilapidated structures.
