This is a Knight of the South Branch Valley competing in the West Virginia State Jousting Championship. This competition was held the 71st Mountain State Forest Festival - an annual event held in Elkins, WV on the first weekend in October..
This young Knight has just successfully lanced the small white ring from the thin black wand hanging down from the cross bar behind him. They run at a full gallop and try to lance three rings in a run.During each succeeding round, the size of the ring is reduced by 1/4 inch. During this round the rings were 1 1/4 inch in diameter. In the winning round, the rings were reduced to 1 inch in diameter and the winner lanced all three rings successfully at a full gallop - it is really exciting to see them do this with these small rings!
Location/Date: Mountain State Forest Festival held on the campus of Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, WV, October 6, 2007.
