Gorillas at the National Zoo

Gorillas at the National Zoo

previous | home | next

I really enjoy watching the interactions among the gorillas in the gorilla yard at the National Zoo. In the top panel we see Kwame (8 months old) chewing on a stick that his older brother (31/2 years old) is holding for him. In the bottom panel we see another young gorilla riding on its mother's back - a good safe place while in the gorilla yard!

Tomorrow I will show a newly fledged robin chick that was born in Brookside Gardens this spring.

(Top panel was shot with a Nikon F5 and a 600mm lens with film while the bottom panel was shot with a Nikon D70 digital SLR and an 80-400mm lens), Summer, 2000 (top panel) and Summer, 2004 (bottom panel)

A couple of years ago, on a visit to the National Zoo, I had an marvelous experience with one of the gorillas. It was leaning against the glass size of its pen. I stood there within inches and looked at it. It turned and looked a me for a while and even raised its hand up to the glass.
