Brookside Gardens has a resident year-round population of Canada geese. They are basically a nuisance since they eat the grass and leave a mess on the walkways. For these reasons, when they nest on the grounds of the Gardens, a staff member will oil the eggs with corn oil. This prevents oxygen from passing into the egg and it will not develop into a chick. This process does not alway work - sometimes the nests are not found and sometimes an egg develops despite being oiled. There were three nests in which some chicks hatched this year in the Gardens.
Here is a photo of momma goose and the first gosling I found on the grounds of the Gardens in 2007. It was the only gosling to hatch from a clutch of 4 eggs in this nest. I visited it for three days and will share some photos I took of it during that time.
Tomorrow we will see this gosling checking on the other eggs that momma goose is incubating.
